Start with the base material
The material receiving the anchor is one of the first things to identify. Concrete, masonry and other base materials can require different anchoring approaches. The condition and thickness of the material also matter, especially when the installation is near an edge or in an older structure.
Bring as much information as possible about the application, including the base material, the item being mounted and any manufacturer or engineering requirements.
Know the load and installation requirements
An anchor is part of a load-carrying connection, so selection should be based on more than whether it physically fits the hole. Static load, vibration, direction of loading, spacing and environmental exposure can all matter.
For structural, overhead, life-safety or engineered installations, use the specified anchor system and installation requirements. Fastener Engineering can help supply hardware, but the engineering requirements should come from the project documents, equipment manufacturer or qualified designer.
Diameter, embedment and hardware fit
Anchor diameter and required embedment affect drill size, hole depth and the hardware used to attach the mounted item. If you are replacing an existing anchor, do not assume a nearby size is equivalent simply because it fits through the bracket or fixture.

Bring the application details
For a replacement or repair, bring the existing hardware when practical. For a new installation, useful information includes the base material, mounting-hole diameter, bracket thickness, required stand-off or spacing, and any specification shown on the plans or equipment documentation.
Having those details at the counter makes it easier to narrow down the appropriate anchor hardware without relying on guesswork.
